October is ending
Two posts in one day? Don’t expect this often!
Really, the first post is just the ubiquitous, what the hell is this thing post. This is actually the first post except that its second and doesn’t make a lot of sense without the first.
Anyway….
October is ending. This is big because as a Technical Project Manager at my work, I am responsible for our yearly DR test which goes down in November. This time of year is crazy.
NanoWrimo is the time of year where we potential writers make an insane goal to write all of November and then use that to kick off a whole year of regular writing leading to completion and publication…so goeth the dream.
My daughter will be moving out soon. My girlfriend says she feels lonely. My friend has season tickets to the falcons. The US is in an upheaval not seen since the sixties. I am coming off of a kidney stone which has been a setback for my weight watchers and exercise plan.
What am I forgetting? Oh yeh, I am buying a house that is closing on November 18th. Don’t believe the people who say ‘no one’ is getting mortgage loans.
So today I needed to finish my project timeline for my DR and email it out. Time spent so far – 0 minutes.
I wanted to transpose two scenes from written form into Scrivener in preparation for NAnoWrimo. Time spent so far – 0 minutes.
I needed to pack up my garage and get that ready to move. Time spent so far – 2 hours. 1 hour left.
I did not need to game today. Time spent in Paragon City, Exalted Server – 3 hours.
I thought about starting a blog before NanoWrimo, but decided against it. Time spent setting up blog and 2 blog posts – 2 hours.
So, 3 hours before bed and a 3 more hours tomorrow AM between going to Stone mountain and walking and taking the girlfriend to the movies before the Patriots game. I need to finish the garage packing, finish the timeline, and transpose two scenes into scrivener. If I transpose the two scenes, I can proudly do a twitter post using the #amwriting hashtag.
Let’s get to it.
The first post
If I have too many diversions, doesn’t it seem a bit foolish to start a blog?
Yes.
Here is the problem. I have a job I like. I have a girlfriend. I have a daughter (who also has a daughter) and they live with me while her husband is getting settled in the Navy. I like sports, I follow the Patriots, I go to each home Falcons game, I am getting back into shape, I am following weight watchers, and I like to game. I do limit my online gaming to just City of Heroes though.
I gave up restoring old cars. I gave up film making (after just 2 shorts and one feature film) because I have too many diversions. (Hence the name of this blog, which I am sure will seem silly if I keep the blog going.)
I have had great ideas for blogs before, but they never panned out because I could not keep up with them.
Wait, let me start from the beginning.
It’s coming up on November and its NanoWrimo again. After last year’s successful NanoWrimo, I was sure I was going to kick off a year of writing and get everything done. Alas, here I sit broken hearted, wanted a novel and only farted.
So, since August, I’ve been preparing to not complete NanoWrimo, but to actually use this as a jumping off for completion of not just a novel, but my writing life.
So, in much self examination, I decided I jumped through too many diversions. So, I decided I would follow successful writer’s best practices; one of which is to start a regular blog. Only this time, I am not going to do some super creative blog that will detract from my novel writing.
It will be me talking to you.
I intend this ‘you’ to be other writers who also suffer through procrastination, diversions, self-doubt, life explosions, and a gazillion other reasons that prevent us from finishing our novels even though something inside of us keeps the dream alive year after year. If this is you, please let me know. If it’s not and you’re still reading the blog, I’d like to know that too.
Summarizing for you blog skimmers, this is a conversational blog that is aimed to keep dreams from crashing on the rocks of shores of life.
